Q: Who formed the Commission?

A: The Commission was formed by the Mayor of the City of Macon and the President of Mercer University in response to a student project focusing on redeveloping downtown and retaining the creative class downtown.  You can download the students’ report in our Gallery section.

Q: Can I join the Commission?

A: Commission Members are appointed either by the Mayor of Macon or the President of Mercer University.  No seats on the Commission are currently vacant.  We welcome public participation, however, by hosting public forums and holding open meetings.  Please check our Events Calendar to find our next meeting.

Q: Who is on the Commission?

A: Commission Members represent a broad cross-section of stakeholders including, business leaders, neighbors, public servants, foundation directors, teachers, students and redevelopment specialists.  These members bring unique skills to the process.  You can review the list of current Commission Members here on our website.

Q: What does the Commission do? Why this area?

A: The Commission seeks to improve safety, walkability, aesthetics, and community within the Corridor by supporting local businesses; redesigning and improving parks and sidewalks; and creatively programming the Corridor’s features.  The Corridor is the main thoroughfare between Macon’s only urban collegiate campus and downtown.  It also is the path connecting many of Macon’s oldest and most diverse intown neighborhoods.  This area was chosen for the unique opportunity it presents and the public/private partnerships which can drive redevelopment in this area.

Q: Does this project only benefit those who live in the Corridor?

A: The College Hill Corridor Commission enhances our whole community.  Read our College Hill Opportunity page to learn a few of the ways that completing this project will make life better for everyone in Macon.  Helping our major intown businesses and neighborhoods grow increases available jobs and generates new taxes to relieve the burden on Macon’s citizens.  This project addresses a broad range of public concerns, incorporating economic development, enabling alternative transportation, providing affordable housing, growing new jobs and making Macon a prettier place to live.

Q: How do I get involved?

A:  Feel free to Contact Us to with any questions or ideas.  You may also want to check our Events Calendar to find out about upcoming public meetings and events.  All of the Commission’s meetings are open to the public.  Sharing your ideas and attending events in the Corridor is a great way to support our work.

Q: Where can I read about ongoing or upcoming projects?

A: Our website is the best place to keep up with the Commission’s work.  You can read about past studies, meetings and events and learn about what’s on the horizon.  Please consider signing up for our Newsletter for the latest news from the Commission.

Q: Who has oversight over the Commission’s recommendations?

A: The Commission works within the standard framework of development to complete projects.  We work within the City of Macon’s usual process of business and within the governing structures of our private partners.  To fund these projects, we seek sponsorships from many different public and private organizations.

Q: How can I suggest an activity?
